The operation, facilitated by the United Arab Emirates, took place near the northern border of the two countries and caused moving scenes in a hospital in the Chernihiv region in Ukraine, where the liberated prisoners were welcomed.
The Ukrainian families arrived carrying flags and photographs of their missing relatives, desperate to obtain news. Some came hoping that someone among the returnees had seen their loved ones in captivity.
At the same time, Russian officials said 205 Russian prisoners held in Ukraine were sent back to Russia.
