Update:

Black smoke escaped from the sixtine chapel chimney on Wednesday evening, indicating that no pope was chosen while the cardinals began their sacred task of succeeding Pope Francis.

Thousands of people gathered all day on Saint-Pierre square, braving hours of waiting to watch the old process take place on giant screens.

Applause broke out when the doors of the chapel closed behind 133 cardinals, marking the beginning of a secret conclave imbued with centuries of tradition.

After the vote has extended until dinner time, some left frustrated, but those who stayed applauded when the smoke finally came out.

The cardinals, participating in the most geographically diversified conclave in the history of the church, returned to the Sistine Chapel Thursday morning to start their search for a successor to Pope Francis.
