At least 16 people were killed, and 51 others were wounded, on Sunday, after a collision between a passenger bus and a truck equipped with a crane, in an area located north of Cote d’Ivoire, according to the Ministry of Transport.

An official statement stated that the bus was on its way from the coastal city of San Pedro, in the southwest of the country, to the capital of Burkina Faso and Agadogo, when the accident occurred, which led to a large number of victims.

The accident shed light on the challenges related to the safety of land transport in the country, in light of the continued recording of fatal accidents, often attributed to the deterioration of infrastructure, the absence of maintenance, in addition to excessive speed and dangerous driving behaviors, according to estimates of a number of observers.

Côte d’Ivoire, as in several African countries, is witnessing repeated traffic accidents, amid increasing demands from civil and official authorities to enhance traffic safety procedures and improve road quality.
