Israeli authorities released 30 Palestinian prisoners on Friday, hours after Hamas freed other captives in a deal to extend their temporary truce in Gaza for another day.

The prisoners – including 23 children and seven women – were released hours after Hamas freed eight Israeli captives.

A bus carrying the Palestinian prisoners was met in Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank, where dozens of men, some waving green Hamas flags, greeted them.

Hamas freed two Israeli captives in a first release on Thursday, followed by six more captives later in the evening, according to Israeli authorities.

Since its entry into force on November 24, the truce has allowed Hamas to free 110 prisoners, including 80 Israelis.

The majority of the 30 freed non-Israeli captives were from Thailand, released under a separate agreement.

Israel released 240 Palestinian prisoners in exchange.

The Israeli army announced on Friday that it had resumed combat operations in the Gaza Strip a few minutes after the truce with Hamas expired at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT).
