Iran: Funeral of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran


After a funeral in Tehran, Ismail Haniyeh’s remains are expected to be buried on Friday in Qatar, where he lived in exile.

In Iran, a mourning crowd gathered around the coffin of Ismail Haniyeh as it was transported in a vehicle through Tehran.

Palestinian and Iranian flags were waved by thousands of mourners at the funeral of the head of Hamas’s political bureau.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led the funeral prayer at Tehran University, with Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian at his side.

After the funeral in Tehran, Ismail Haniyeh’s remains are expected to be buried in Qatar on Friday, where he was living in exile.

Hamas leader Tehran was killed in an airstrike that hit his residence in Tehran, Hamas said Wednesday. He was visiting Iran to attend the inauguration of Iran’s new president.

Israel had vowed to kill Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders following the Islamist group’s October 7 attack that killed 1,200 people.

The strike came hours after Israel targeted a senior commander of Iran-allied Hezbollah in the Lebanese capital of Beirut.
