A few days ago, the Senate in Rome gave the green light to this agreement, supported by the government of Giorgia Meloni.

The text was voted on by a narrow majority, 77 deputies out of 140. Its adoption was welcomed by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. It plans to open, in a few months, two reception centers in northwest Albania, which will be financed and managed by Italy.

For some Albanian MPs, this project constitutes a renunciation of national sovereignty.

But for Giorgia Meloni, who was elected with the promise of reducing illegal immigration, this agreement has a certain importance.

Ultimately, Rome plans to send up to 36,000 migrants per year to these centers.
