Like every year since 1988, December 1 marks World AIDS Day. Every year a new theme is chosen by the World AIDS Campaign (WAC) Global Steering Committee, which guides the event’s awareness activities and campaigns. For this 35th edition, the theme is entitled: “Entrusting leadership to communities”. UNAIDS, a United Nations agency, is responsible for awareness-raising actions and public policies across the world.

On this occasion, UNAIDS unveils a report indicating the possibility of eradicating the HIV virus by 2030. However, Angeli Achrekar, Deputy Executive Director of UNAIDS, recalls that to achieve this objective, it will be necessary better define and manage populations at risk, by offering them better care. Even if UNAIDS welcomes the drop in AIDS contamination, the organization recalls that nearly 39 million people were living with the HIV virus in 2022.

Furthermore, the World Health Organization estimates that 630,000 people died from HIV and 1.3 million people contracted the virus, still in 2022.

There is currently no vaccine or medication that can treat the disease. the best protection remains prevention such as the use of condoms and blood screening.
