Winter is here: between polar cold and heavy snowfall in northern Europe and repeated floods in the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
In Sweden, the polar cold wave that hit northern Europe caused significant disruption. Up to 1,000 cars and trucks were stuck on a highway between the municipality of Hörby and the town of Kristianstad due to high winds and snow that submerged the area.
Although most cars were eventually able to leave, a number of trucks were still stuck Thursday evening, according to forecasts by the Swedish Transport Administration.
Winter conditions continued to cause problems across the country, with snow, wind and slippery conditions leading to road accidents in the south and temperatures as low as -43.6 degrees Celsius were recorded in the north.
Electricity was cut to some 4,000 homes.
In Denmarkhuge traffic problems persisted following Wednesday’s snowstorm, with many motorists remaining stuck on a highway for more than 20 hours.
The UKflooding caused by torrential rain has affected many homes across the UK, forcing residents to evacuate with all their belongings in Tewkesbury, Berkshire and Nottinghamshire.
In Germany, the Moselle flooded many streets and promenades in Cochem after heavy falls. The water level in the old town also continues to rise and currently exceeds 7.60 meters.
In France, Civil Protection deployed four pumps to divert water from several towns in northern Pas-de-Calais and the Nord, the hardest hit by the recent floods. Two large capacity pumps and two smaller ones were installed in Mardyck, outside Dunkirk.
