Military and strategic expert, Major General Fayez Al-Duwairi, said that the monitoring mechanism that is being discussed by Israel in Gaza differs according to the regions, pointing out that the major Israeli dilemma lies in the Netzarim axis.
Al-Duwairi pointed out to Tel Aviv Tribune that there are three areas where the occupation army is stationed in the Strip, including the Philadelphi Corridor, whose width varies from 75 to 225 metres according to reports, amid talk of the possibility of expanding it to 1,450 metres along a length of 14 kilometres.
He pointed out that the Netzarim axis was expanded from 2 km to 4 km, while many built-up areas along the border fence separating Gaza and Israel were destroyed and added to the buffer zones, confirming that there is talk of 100 square kilometers in the three areas.
Philadelphia Axis
Regarding the monitoring mechanism, Al-Duwairi said that there is talk of American-Egyptian-Israeli coordination in the Philadelphia axis to establish a deep underground wall equipped with sensors, cameras, and watchtowers.
The strategic expert asserts that Philadelphia has no military or vital value in light of Egyptian control and the continuous flights of Israeli and Western spy planes and satellites.
Israel did not attack or occupy this axis since the beginning of the large-scale ground military operation in late October 2023, except 7 months after the beginning of the war, according to Al-Duwairi.
The military expert concluded that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s adherence to the Philadelphi Corridor is “more a political maneuver and tricks than a strategy.”
Netzarim axis
On the other hand, the Israeli surveillance measures in Netzarim are completely different, as there are longitudinal and transverse trenches, in addition to 4 military points, 3 of which are between Salah al-Din and al-Rashid streets, as al-Duwairi says.
He pointed out that the real dilemma in Netzarim is that this axis cuts through the middle of the Strip and limits the movement of citizens from north to south or vice versa, while the Philadelphi axis takes on a political dimension because it separates Gaza from the world, while the buffer zones deprive the besieged Strip of the food basket.
Regarding the border agricultural areas, the military expert stressed that the wall and fence were present along the border, but they did not prevent the “Al-Aqsa Flood” attack on October 7.
