After months of rejecting the idea, U.S. officials now argue that a ceasefire agreement should be signed.

U.S. officials believe Israel has accomplished all it can militarily in the Gaza Strip, but Israeli leaders are divided on the question of ending the war, said Joost Hiltermann, Middle East program director at the International Crisis Group.

Hiltermann told host Steve Clemons that the Israeli military believes Hamas is sufficiently weakened for now, while its politicians argue that the war should be open, allowing for a resumption after the release of Israeli captives.

The question remains: Is the United States prepared to let the internal Israeli debate run its course, even if it means an endless war on Gaza?
