Discussions on a ceasefire in Gaza have resumed in recent days.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said last week that Israel had accepted the conditions of a 60-day ceasefire, and that the negotiators could meet to cut a path to finally end the War of Israel of almost 21 months against Gaza.
Hamas said that he had delivered a “positive response” to the mediators, with amendments, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu qualified the Palestinian group asking “unacceptable” but sent negotiators to the Qatari capital, Doha, for talks.
Netanyahu should visit Washington, DC on Monday, when reports say that Trump would like an agreement.
“There could be a Gaza contract next week,” Trump told journalists on Saturday, adding that he had not yet been informed of the counterpoppea in Hamas, but that it was “good” that they had answered.
Here is everything you need to know:
What does Hamas ask?
According to reports, there are three main requests:
End of Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)
At least 743 Palestinians have been killed by looking for help on GHF sites in Gaza in recent weeks.
At the end of June, the Haaretz newspaper reported that Israeli soldiers had been deliberately condemned to shoot unarmed people awaiting food.
The humanitarian workers said on several occasions that they were able to distribute the aid and food to the Palestinians in Gaza and criticized the GHF to advance the political agenda of Israel.
“He makes conditional aid for political and military objectives,” said Tom Fletcher, United Nations humanitarian leader in May.
“This makes famine a negotiation chip. It is a cynical relay show … a fig leaf for new violence and displacement. ”
Israeli military withdrawals
Hamas wants the Israeli army to retire to the posts it occupied before raping the cease-fire in March this year.
In May, the Israeli army began new ground operations in Gaza, killing hundreds of Palestinians, to take the “operational control” of large expanses of the band.
The Israeli army had already created the Netzarim corridor, which divides the Gaza Strip into the northern and southern sectors, shortly after the launch of the war, and in April, Netanyahu announced the creation of the Morag corridor in the South Gaza Strip.
International guarantees for the end of the war
In March, Israel unilaterally broke a ceasefire that had been agreed in January, despite the cease-fire conditions that were confirmed by the Palestinian part.
This time, Hamas and other Palestinian groups want international insurance that it will not be repeated.
Hamas would have liked an American guarantee that Israeli air attacks and land operations, which killed thousands of Palestinians, will not resume even if the cease-fire ends permanent in the war.
What does the original proposal supported by the United States say?
There would be a key accent on the remaining Israeli captives in Gaza.
The plan is to release 10 living Israeli captives held by Hamas and the bodies of 18 others in exchange for Palestinians hosted in Israeli prisons. The press release would be staggered over several days.
Fifty captives are still in Gaza, with twenty years alive.
On the question of aid, the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross would help distribute sufficient quantities to the Palestinians.
Finally, he calls for progressive drawing of Israeli troops of certain parts of Gaza.
What is Israel say?
Netanyahu would have accepted the original American proposal, but described the amendments of “unacceptable” Hamas.
He said he would not end the war until not all captives are released and that Hamas is “destroyed”. This last objective was called impossible by many analysts and would be an open political objective to pursue the war as long as it believes that it will serve its personal interests.
Netanyahu is tried for corruption and is still largely blamed in Israeli society for security failures that led to Hamas flooding in the AL-AQSA on October 7, 2023, during which 1,139 people died in Israel and around 250 were caught in captivity.
Analysts believe that Netanyahu wants to continue the war of reprisals against Gaza until he can win enough political lever to reject affairs against him and build enough popular support to remain the head of Israel.
The Netanyahu War was supported by its far -right ministers, in particular Itamar Ben Gvir, Minister of National Security, and Bezalel Smotrich, Minister of Finance. They want the military operations of Israel to be intensified to kill more Palestinians and stop providing help to besieged and hungry people in Gaza.
What does life look like for the Palestinians while waiting?
Israel is still launching deadly attacks on Gaza, with at least 138 Palestinians killed in the past 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza.
In the occupied West Bank, the bulldozers have demolished the houses and Israel has killed more than 1,000 people since October 7, 2023.
The inhabitants of the West Bank also undergo recurring attacks of Israeli soldiers and armed settlers from the illegal colonies, as well as serious limitations on movement and access to livelihoods.
What are the chances that an agreement will be concluded?
Trump seems eager to reach one, and the Palestinians in Gaza are desperate for Israeli attacks to cease.
However, a major obstacle remains.
“Israel and Netanyahu are not interested in reaching a ceasefire,” Adnan Hayajneh, professor of international relations at the University of Qatar, told Tel Aviv Tribune, adding that there is a “very thin” ceasefire.
“What Israel wants is clear … a land without people,” said Hayajneh. “Thus, the Palestinians receive three choices … Murder of death … Being killed … (or) leave the earth, but the Palestinians have so far proved that they will not leave the earth, whatever happens.”
