What does the Gaza Strip need to overcome starvation? | policy

Gaza – At a time when the Israeli government claimed facilities for the arrival of food aid to the Gaza Strip, the number of trucks received through the crossings shows the occupation’s adoption of the distillation policy that controls the passage of limited quantities that meet only 14% of the daily need for more than two million Palestinians, after a complete prevention of all food items over a period of 5 months.

The total number of trucks loaded with aid that entered the Gaza Strip during the past two weeks was 1210 trucks, while the actual need in the mentioned period is estimated at 8,400 trucks.

Compared to the quantities of food that arrived in Gaza recently revealed that it reached before the war, the urgent need for the flow of goods without restrictions and at least 600 trucks per day for more than 3 months, so that the besieged Gaza Strip will move away from the specter of famine that controls its inhabitants.

The Israeli occupation forces also prevented more than 90,000 trucks from entering the Gaza Strip since the beginning of last March, after the crossings were closed in a tight way as part of a systematic plan to starve the population.

Single starvation

A private source in the Ministry of National Economy in Gaza told Al -Jazeera Net that 122,000 trucks were reaching the Gaza Strip annually before the start of the war in October 2023, distributed between those dedicated to the aid provided by international institutions, led by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) or private commercial.

The government source pointed out that 30 thousand trucks were received annually through the Republic of Egypt through the Salah al -Din Commercial Road, with an estimated 28% of the total imports, and the rest were arriving from the Israeli side.

He also pointed out that 60% of the total trucks that were arriving in the Gaza Strip before the war were dedicated to foodstuffs, and half of them represent aid distributed by UNRWA and international institutions, estimating the Gaza Strip’s need for flour with 15 thousand tons per month, including 8 thousand tons that arrived for UNRWA.

According to the source in the Ministry of Economy, the monthly need for the residents of the Gaza Strip from basic commodities is estimated at 3700 tons of sugar, 3300 tons of rice, 2100 tons of oils and 330 tons of lentils, whose consumption rate during the current famine increased to 2000 tons per month due to the dependence of most of the population.

The source pointed out that in the context of deepening the crisis of starvation in the Gaza Strip, Israel intentionally:

  • Smarting the work of active international institutions in the Palestinian territories, and decided to prevent UNRWA from working in its territory since the end of last January.
  • The suspension of the work of the agreed humanitarian protocol on January 18, which coincided with the start of the first stage of the ceasefire.
  • Tightening the siege and the closure of the crossings completely since the beginning of last March.
  • Preventing the passage of aid to the stores of international institutions and distributing them fairly to all residents of the Gaza Strip.
  • Resorting to the opening of American aid centers that offer crumbs of food without a clear mechanism, which causes residents to death.

The government source believes that Gaza is recovering faster in the event that the commercial sector is allowed to enter the needs of food and goods without restrictions, which will facilitate the access of goods to citizens and reduce their high price.

The source described the economic situation in the Gaza Strip as “very difficult” due to the longest war, preventing food entry, the absence of income sources from most working groups, the lack of cash liquidity, and the arrival of people to a state of malnutrition.

He pointed out that Gaza needs the flow of goods daily without restrictions for 3 months in order to regain their recovery in the food sector only, and any citizen can buy goods at their previously known cost and become accessible to all.

The Israeli restriction continues

In this context, the researcher in economic affairs, Ahmed Abu Qamar, believes that the real problem in the lack of food in the Gaza Strip is the policy of “distillation of goods” that Israel has pursued since the beginning of the war, as the quantities that Israel allows to enter 15% of the need of Gazans at best does not exceed, and in previous months it only allowed to enter 2% or 3% of the population’s need.

The researcher said, in an interview with Al -Jazeera Net, that the Israeli restrictions on the passage of commodities created a state of economic distortion in the markets and made prices illogical, and this explains the marathon rises of prices and the lack of work of the market in natural dynamics.

He added, “Even in the truce period at the end of January and February last, Israel has adopted the policy of dumping with certain goods – such as body, for example – and deprived the sector of other varieties, and therefore we do not look at the markets in terms of quantity only, but the sector needs the diversity that moves the markets.”

The researcher in the economic affairs explained that the “dumping policy” is no less dangerous than the “distillation policy”, both of which are harmful to the economy and prices, noting that the introduction of commercial trucks is important to the markets and achieves diversity and solves the problem of liquidity in part.

He pointed out that “Israel intends to keep the state of starvation and the prices are high because it insists on introducing trucks in certain quantities across only a few merchants, and prevents import except in limited quantities.”

The same spokesman pointed out that despite the importance of commercial trucks, it cannot be ignored that 95% of the population of the Gaza Strip are dependent on aid, which keeps the state of starvation in place as long as Israel refused to secure its entry and work according to the relief and humanitarian protocol agreed in January.

Prices are still high compared to their normal rates, and the few quantities that enter into view of the need of the population are explained and the markets are thirsty for large quantities.

The economic researcher stated that Israel prevents diversity in the markets and is satisfied with the introduction of some foodstuffs, at a time when the market needs several strategic commodities that are no less important than food, such as fuel, which is the primary engine of inflation and high prices, and the prevention of its introduction for months of record increases in its prices that exceeded 1,600% compared to its price before the war.

The Gaza Strip also needs alternative energy tools after two years of a complete interruption of the electrical current, in addition to securing the basics of shelter from mobile homes and tents, which Israel refuses to enter.
