Israel announces it will withdraw some troops from the besieged Gaza Strip.

Israel has announced it will withdraw some of its forces from Gaza, more than two months after launching a ground invasion of the besieged Palestinian territory, a move that could potentially lead to a new phase in its war against Hamas.

The announcement appears to align with previously announced plans by Israeli officials for a low-intensity military campaign that could last several months, focusing on Hamas’ remaining strongholds.

But with more than 20,000 Palestinians killed and hundreds of thousands displaced, there are growing questions about whether Israel will be able to achieve its stated goal of toppling Hamas.

So what could this announcement mean for Israel, the Palestinians and Hamas fighters?

Presenter: Elizabeth Puranam

Andreas Krieg – Assistant Professor in the Department of Defense Studies at King’s College London.

Diana Buttu – Former legal advisor to the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Yossi Mekelberg – Associate Member of the MENA Program, Chatham House.
