On Monday, the US State Department described a video clip in which an injured Palestinian appeared tied to the front of an Israeli army vehicle as “shocking,” but considered the army’s statement regarding the incident “completely appropriate.”

During a Foreign Ministry press conference, a reporter asked, “Doesn’t this essentially represent the army using the Palestinians as human shields?”

Department spokesman Matthew Miller responded, “We watched this clip, and it was shocking. This practice is completely unacceptable. Humans should never be used as human shields.”

He continued, “The IDF must quickly investigate what happened and hold those responsible accountable.”

On Saturday, Israeli forces tied a wounded Palestinian youth to the front of an Israeli military vehicle during a raid in the city of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank.

Video clips showed the young Palestinian man, Mujahid Raed Abadi, lying and tied on the hood of the military vehicle that was passing on a street in Jenin between two ambulances.

The occupation soldiers did not provide any aid to the young man who was bleeding, and he says that they beat and tortured him continuously, especially in the affected areas. He confirmed that two soldiers carried him and kept moving him right and left until he fell to the ground, then they tied him to the military vehicle as a human shield, and the temperature was very high. The Israeli occupation army admitted that its soldiers tied a wounded Palestinian to the front hood of a military vehicle during a raid in the city of Jenin.

The Israeli army said in a statement that soldiers were exposed to fire and returned fire, wounding a suspect and arresting him. He added in the statement that the soldiers then violated military protocol.

He added that “the behavior of the forces in the video clip of the incident does not comply with the values” of the Israeli army, and that the matter will be investigated and dealt with.

Miller said, “I saw the statement they issued that these actions are not consistent with the orders these soldiers received, and that the matter is being investigated and those involved will be dealt with accordingly. This is completely appropriate.”

Abadi is currently suffering from bone fragmentation in his right shoulder and right foot, in addition to abrasions in his back as a result of being placed on the hood of a military vehicle at a very high temperature. Doctors also told him that his treatment period will be long.

Israeli attacks were already increasing in the West Bank before the outbreak of war in Gaza in October, but their intensity has escalated since then with the occupation army intensifying night raids on towns and cities in the West Bank, as well as attacks by Jewish settlers on Palestinian villages.
