In light of the strict Israeli siege since the outbreak of the war, the Gaza Strip has lived a humanitarian catastrophe, which is manifested by its worst form in the scenes of children who are hungry, so how does hunger destroy the human body?
The scenes of the hungry children accounted for the attention of the international community and the international media of all kinds and fields, and the American Washington Post published a documented report with videos and photographs showing children similar to skeletons, mothers, and their faces were marked by signs of sadness and lack of trick, and they cannot feed the pleasures of their livers.
The newspaper also attached its report drawings showing the impact of energy lack and glucose on the human body and its digestive system.
In its report, the newspaper states that a million children out of more than two million people suffer from an almost complete lack of food, in light of international reports confirming that a third of the population does not find what they eat for consecutive days, amid a sharp rise in hunger deaths.
She pointed out that the United Nations and humanitarian organizations have warned of an imminent starvation, and now it confirms that the famine has become a reality so that the Director General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanum Guerberesus, described the scenes press conference in Gaza, saying, “I do not see a more appropriate description of what is happening except that it is collective starvation, which is man -made, and this is very clear.”
At the same time, about 6,000 trucks loaded with food, water and supplies belong to the United Nations at the outskirts of Gaza, and the international organization confirms that Israel prevents the entry of these caravans.
Although an Israeli military official said last Wednesday that “there is a lack of food security inside Gaza,” accusing the United Nations of not delivering aid and claiming that the crossings are open, the spokesman for the organization Stephen Dujarric refuted these allegations.
The newspaper quoted Dujarik as confirming that Israel is the only party that controls what enters Gaza and in any amount and the quality of supplies.
How does hunger destroy the human body?
According to the “Washington Post”, when hunger is permissible in a place whose effect is reflected negatively on the human body, the body derives its energy mainly from the carbohydrates that turn into glucose, and when the stored energy is running out, the body begins to eat itself by burning fats and then the muscles, then the vital organs begin to stop one by one.
In children, this happens more quickly, because their energy needs are higher and their reserves are less, the muscles begin to shrink and the regulation of the body stops, the skin color is faded and the gums are bleeding, and the immune system weakens to the point of inability to resist diseases such as diarrhea, which enters the body in a vicious circle of drain.
Alex de Wal: Unlike the bombing, hunger does not stop with the end of the shooting, it is a slow massacre even after the war puts its visits.
The digestive system is one of the first body systems that collapse due to continuous hunger, as stomach secretions decrease and are imprisoned and inspected its appetite, and if food is available again, the hungry should be fed slowly and under medical supervision.
The effect of hunger on the body does not stop there. Rather, the heart also shrinks, which reduces blood flow, the pulse slows down, blood pressure decreases, and the heart may completely stop.
As for the respiratory system, it is gradually affected and completely stops performing its function when the breathing rate decreases, and the lungs’ ability to absorb oxygen.
Hunger also affects the brain, and the American newspaper indicates that children are most vulnerable to permanent brain damage as a result of lack of energy, which affects their learning and mental development in the future.
The United Nations Children’s Fund Data (UNICEF) shows that 80% of hunger deaths are children, and 5,000 children were treated with malnutrition within two weeks in July.
Although Israel declared its intention to allow air dropping of aid, the “Washington Post” confirms in its report that the planes carry quantities that are very less than one truck, and who are often waiting for them.
