The US Department of Defense revealed the need for costly repairs to the temporary pier that Washington built to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, which was severely damaged by weather conditions.

According to the Washington Post, the cost of necessary repairs is estimated at about $22 million, with the possibility of rising to $28 million. The newspaper revealed that American military teams are currently seeking to rebuild the necessary foundations for a similar pier in the Israeli port of Ashdod, an area that provides greater protection from the strong waves that caused serious damage to the temporary facility.

US Department of Defense spokeswoman Sabrina Singh expected that the reconstruction of the pier would be completed by the end of this week, and deliveries of food, water and other urgent aid to the residents of Gaza would begin immediately after that.

Singh claimed that her country continues to cooperate with the international community in order to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza “as soon as possible.”

On May 17, the US Central Command (Centcom) announced the opening of the temporary naval pier on the coast of Gaza, but it quickly collapsed after a week of operation due to the waves, and parts of it separated and reached the shore of the city of Ashdod.
