The summit comes as Poland, one of Ukraine’s main supporters, begins its rotating presidency of the European Union.
Polish, French, Italian, German and British defense ministers met in Warsaw on Monday to discuss military aid to Ukraine and European security in the face of the Russian threat.
This meeting of the main chiefs of the EU and UK armies comes as Poland began its rotating presidency of the EU on January 1.
Before going to Warsaw, French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu said that rearmament “goes beyond the military question”describing it as a global issue for the sovereignty of the country.
“No issue is more important than security spending”says Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, Polish Minister of Defense.
“It is one of the three fundamental pillars of a strong Europe: a strong society, that is to say our resistance to hybrid warfare, a strong army, strong national armies and the strength of our alliance”.
Poland is a key NATO member on the alliance’s eastern border and remains one of Ukraine’s staunchest alliesboth in terms of defense and humanitarian aid, especially since its geographical position allows it to quickly transport supplies to the Ukrainian front lines.
Warsaw plans to devote 4.7% of its GDP to defense in 2025while the upcoming inauguration of Donald Trump raises fears of a drop in American aid to Kyiv.
