Since April 15, 2023, the Sudanese army has been confronting the FSR paramilitaries. Violence which has left more than 10,000 dead and which, according to the UN, has pushed nearly eight million people to flee.
It is a conflict with disastrous humanitarian consequences. Part of the Sudanese population has taken refuge in neighboring countries such as South Sudan, and is heavily dependent on humanitarian aid. The UN warns that this situation risks creating the world’s largest hunger crisis.
“The war in Sudan is plunging millions of people into what could soon be the world’s largest hunger crisis. In South Sudan, I met mothers and children who fled violence on numerous occasions. They escaped the fighting, but they struggle to escape hunger“, explains Cindy Cindy McCain, Director of the World Food Program.
On Wednesday, the Sudanese authorities agreed to let through humanitarian aid which had until then been blocked at the border with Chad. A relief, as 18 million Sudanese are acutely food insecure, according to the World Food Program.
