Despite the ceasefire entered into force, a few weeks ago, the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is very worrying.

The head of the United Nations Bureau for Surses for Project Support (UNOPS) warns that a humanitarian disaster continues in the Palestinian enclave despite the truce between Israel and Hamas.

Jorge Moreira da Silva went on site on Thursday to take into account the damage caused by war. Its presence on the ground will facilitate the delivery of aid which the Palestinians are sorely needs.

Jorge Moreira Da Silva, Executive Director of the United Nations Bureau for the Support Services for Projects, explained to us what he has noted:

“What I saw on the infrastructure perplexed me. The collapse of infrastructure, housing, roads, 70 % of all infrastructure is destroyed

What I remember from my visit to Gaza is that it is essential to provide all the humanitarian aid necessary in an emergency. But it is also essential to prepare a quick recovery. And an ordered recovery means removing the rubble, rehabilitating the roads, bringing electricity, bringing sanitation, building hospitals and schools. “He said.

According to Jorge Moreira da Silva, it is up to the international community to take strong measures:

“I have seen clearly hope, the expectation that the ceasefire will last and that the worst has already passed. We cannot fail. We cannot fail. It is important that the international community exercises The necessary pressure on the parties.. “

Jorge Moreira da Silva has no doubt that the European Union will play an important role. The European Commission announced last month a new humanitarian aid program in Gaza worth 120 million euros, which brings total EU humanitarian aid to Gaza to more than 450 million ‘Euros since 2023. In addition, EU airfields have sent more than 3,800 tonnes of aid.

This visit to Gaza was part of a mission of UNOPS in the Middle East, including in Lebanon and Syria.
