Vladimir Putin has said he would prefer incumbent US President Joe Biden to prevail in a possible clash with Republican frontrunner Donald Trump in the US presidential elections next November.
In an interview with Russian public television journalist Pavel Zarubin, published on the Kremlin’s Telegram channel, Vladimir Putin confides that Joe Biden is “moreexperienced and more predictable” than former President Donald Trump, who is currently in the lead race to be the Republican nominee.
_“He’s an old-school politician,”_declares Vladimir Putin about Joe Biden.
“But we will work with any American leader, elected by the American people”he adds.
Asked about the advanced age of President Joe Biden (82), Vladimir Putin brushes the question aside.
“I am not a doctor and I do not consider it appropriate to comment on this matter”he reacts.
He then suggests that President Biden was in good health when the two heads of state met in Geneva in 2021. “They talked about his incapacity, but I didn’t see anything like that”says Vladimir Putin.
Recent polls suggest that the American public is concerned about the age of President Joe Biden, who, if re-elected, will be 87 at the end of his second term.
This is the first time that the Russian president has spoken publicly about the upcoming presidential election in the United States.
It comes days after Donald Trump suggested at a rally in South Carolina that he “would encourage” Russia to attack any NATO country that does not contribute 2% of its GDP to the coffers of the military alliance.
His comments, coupled with his questioning of US funding for Kyiv, makes you fear to Europe that a second term of Donald Trump does not considerably upset the unified position of the West on the conflict in Ukraine and thus plays into the hands of Vladimir Putin.
President Joe Biden said Tuesday that Donald Trump had “bowed before a Russian dictator”while NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, has warned Wednesday that the credibility of the alliance in terms of deterrence should not be “undermined”.
In the interview, Vladimir Putin also criticized Joe Biden’s Ukraine policy. The US president has always promised to support Kyiv “as long as it takes” and pressured the lower house of Congress to approve a stalled $60 billion aid package for the war-torn country.
“I think the current administration’s position is wrong, and I have spoken to President Biden about it”said Vladimir Putin.
In a recent interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Vladimir Putin said his “military operation” in Ukraine was intended to protect Russia’s security interests against NATO’s eastward expansion.
He told reporter Pavel Zarubin on Wednesday that he expected more from his interview with Tucker Carlson, saying the American didn’t ask the tough questions he expected.
