Storm Pia brought heavy rain and strong winds to northern Europe this Thursday and Friday. Many trees fell and blocked roads and several North Sea flood warnings were issued.

In Belgium, a woman was fatally injured by a falling tree. A similar accident was announced in the Netherlands.

Many trips were interrupted just before Christmas. In Norway, flight and ferry departures have been canceled and, in several places, the wind has already caused significant damage.

Storm Pia also hit Denmark where the wind remains strong in many parts of the country. Numerous falling trees and flooding have paralyzed coastal areas.

Before Christmas, rail travelers in parts of Germany experienced disruptions. The affected routes included major cities such as Hamburg, Hanover, Frankfurt and Munich.

German authorities warned Friday that the storm surge could reach three meters or more above the average high tide in the North Sea.
