Led by Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, national executive director of SAG-AFTRA, a U.S. union representing more than 160,000 media workers, the strikers highlighted the threat of AI replacing human performers without their consent or fair compensation.

The protest marks a major industrial action following the union’s call for a strike after 18 months of fruitless negotiations with major gaming companies.

The global video games industry, worth 170 billion euros, experienced a major crisis in 2023 with more than 10,000 job cuts, a trend that continues in 2024 with already 8,000 jobs lost.
