Located in the Bay of San Francisco, Alcatraz attracts visitors from around the world who visit its ruined cell blocks, listen to the stories of former prisoners and discover the famous criminals who were locked up there.
Closed in 1963 due to high costs and degradation, prison would require massive and costly repairs to be usable.
Critics warn that converting the site into a functional prison would face important legal, environmental and community obstacles.
The island is protected by the National Park Service and is home to nesting sea birds and other wild species.
