In Brazil, it’s time for “festa do divine espirito santo“.
The event mixes Catholic rituals with folklore, theater and music in a tradition dating from the 19th century which has its origin in the promise made by Queen Isabelle of Portugal to the Holy Spirit to make peace in her country reign.
A highlight are the Cavalhadaswhere participants dressed as medieval knights replay symbolic battles between Christians and Moors. Masked riders, or mascaradosbring humor and mystery, hiding their identity by parading in the streets. The festivities also include religious processions, symbolic rituals and community events.
