On January 7, Qatar Airways operated the first international commercial flight to Damascus since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad.

Passengers were greeted by relatives at the airport and Syrian flags were waved on board the planes.

Qatar contributed to the reconstruction of the airport, damaged by years of conflict. A Royal Jordanian Airlines flight also assessed the technical condition of the airport.

A new chapter opens for Syria, with the start of diplomatic relations and potential reconstruction in partnership with Gulf countries.
