Thousands of people gathered at Union Square in Iaşi in eastern Romania to celebrate the union of the Romanian Principalities.
166 years ago, in 1859, the unification of the Romanian principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia into a single national state marked the first step towards the union of all provinces where Romanians were in the majority.
Recognized by history as the “Little Union”, the unification of the two principalities took place under the reign of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, initiator of the reforms which laid the foundations of modern Romania.
