Robert Francis Prevost, the first American pope in 2,000 years of history of the Catholic church, appeared in front of the crowd of Saint-Pierre square for the first time as Pope Leon XIV.
He appeared dressed in the traditional red cape of the papacy, a habit that Pope Francis had abandoned during his election in 2013.
The identity of François’s successor was announced at the Balcony of the Saint-Pierre Basilica by the Protodiacre, the French Cardinal Dominique Mamberti.
