The demonstration, led by the group “The Canaries have a limit”, drew attention to increasing concerns concerning the increase in housing costs, pressure on infrastructure and environmental damage caused by the high number of visitors.
The organizers say that the current tourist model has little premises despite the reception of nearly 18 million tourists in 2024.
The demonstrators urge the authorities to introduce an ecotax, to suspend new tourist accommodation permits and to regulate the purchases of properties by non-residents.
This follows a mass demonstration in April, signaling growing frustration among the residents of the islands as to the long -term viability of the development focused on tourism.
