The event, which has its origins in Japanese mythology, saw participants laughing loudly for 20 minutes. Some laughed as they looked at each other, while others captured their smiles on their phones.

A 17-year-old participant from Kyoto said the ritual was surprisingly fun, while a first-time participant from Kagoshima called it a memorable family experience.

Guided by priests, this moment of joy aims to bring happiness and luck to everyone for the year to come. Judging by the laughs and smiles, it seems to be working pretty well, at least in the moment.
