The Banksy Museum recently opened in New York and boasts the world’s largest collection of life-size murals by this mysterious and anonymous artist.
The founder of the museum, Haziz Vardar, explains that the idea came to him, before the pandemic, to preserve the artist’s ephemeral works.
“All his works of art disappear, stolen or laundered by the municipalities”said Mr. Vardar.
Vardar believed that if he did nothing, the works would disappear forever.
So he assembled a team of guerrilla artists who set certain conditions before accepting the project.
According to Vardar, artists had to remain anonymous and not create anything for sale.
“When we are finished, we will destroy everything,” said Vardar about the New York museum.
The museum’s executive director, William Meade, expressed the magic of Banksy.
“I think one of the most beautiful aspects of not knowing who Banksy is is that there’s no projection onto him. This art speaks for itself. It’s simplistic, but It’s very powerful.” Mead said.
