Ukraine’s first lady, Olena Zelenska, met with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Wednesday, to mark the thousandth day of the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory.

Olena Zelenska attended the pontiff’s weekly audience, during which Pope Francis condemned this war, denouncing a disaster for humanity. Olena Zelenska and Pope Francis exchanged gifts, after a brief presentation of Ms. Zelenska’s delegation. This meeting comes as Washington has reviewed its position on long-range missiles, which Ukraine used to target Russia, and as the future of American aid remains more uncertain than ever, following the election of Donald Trump, who is preparing his return to the White House.
