The now “super typhoon” Yagi, with winds reaching 245 km/h, brushed past Hong Kong less than 400 km away.

The storm caused flight cancellations, downed trees, school closures and high waves. Authorities had maintained a warning, disrupting transport and other activities, but Hong Kong’s airport and businesses began to return to normal as winds eased on Friday.

Between 1949 and 2023, the southern coastal region of China was hit by 106 typhoons, but only nine of them, including Yagi, were classified as “super typhoons.”

Scientists warn that climate change, by warming the oceans, is causing more powerful and frequent typhoons to occur in the region.
