Video. No Comment: train disaster in Indonesia

Two trains collided on Indonesia’s main island of Java on Friday, killing at least three people, officials said.

The accident occurred about 500 meters from Cicalengka Station in the city of Bandung, West Java.

A Turangga express train carrying 287 passengers was departing from Surabaya, the capital of East Java province, when it collided with a Bandung Raya commuter train heading to Padalarang from Cicalengka station with 191 passengers at around 6:30 a.m.

At least three people were killed, the driver and his assistant of the commuter train and a steward of the express train.

28 people were less seriously injured.

Transportation Ministry spokeswoman Adita Irawati said the cause of the accident was under investigation and rescuers had evacuated all passengers and were working to remove the trains to restore train services.

Train accidents are common on Indonesia’s aging rail network, particularly at level crossings.

The government has spent billions of dollars to improve infrastructure, including roads, railways, airports and power plants, in the world’s largest archipelago, home to more than 270 million people.

A high-speed railway, the first in Southeast Asia, has been commercially operational since October. The 142-kilometer railway, a key project of China’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative, has significantly reduced travel time between Jakarta and Bandung from three hours to around 40 minutes.
