Competitors from around the world took part on Friday December 13 at the start of the legendary Antarctic Ice Marathon, one of the most extreme challenges.
For safety reasons, the course was designed in laps around the Union Glacier Exploration Camp, looping through the breathtaking but unforgiving icy expanses of the Ellsworth Mountains.
Italian Andrea Bonanomi, 36, took first place with a time of 3:23:37. In the women’s category, a new course record was set by American Liesl Muehlhauser in 3:29:16.
Chinese runner Yusheng Ni set a new record in the 100km marathon with a time of 9:20:28.
The next Antarctic Ice Marathon will take place in December 2025.
