The controversial temple is built on the site of an ancient mosque, whose destruction in 1992 by Hindu nationalists fueled tensions between the two communities.

The religious ceremony inaugurating the temple took on the appearance of an electoral campaign. Narendra Modi, who is regularly accused of wanting to make India a Hindu nation, is aiming for a third term at the head of the country during the elections in spring 2024.
