The annual campfire began on December 20 for some 140 Yakushima macaques – a subspecies of Japanese monkey – and will also take place on December 21, the day of the winter solstice. The campfire has been a zoo winter tradition for decades. After powerful Typhoon Vera (Typhoon Isewan) hit Japan in 1959, the zoo’s monkeys began gathering around a fire while staff burned driftwood and scrap wood to warm their bodies. Other monkeys eventually overcame their caution and approached the fire. During this event, many macaques can be seen yawning while warming up. Sweet potatoes are cooked at this campfire and the monkeys are treated to a sizzling feast at 2 p.m. campfireCommentgatherJapanesemacaquesvideo Share 0 FacebookTwitterPinterestEmail telavivtribune.com Follow Author previous post Angry questions to an Israeli journalist regarding the occupation’s killing of prisoners in Gaza News next post 20 thousand martyrs in Gaza, the occupation continues the bombing, and Netanyahu pledges to continue the aggression News You may also like Bookmark The taking: How does Gaza celebrate Eid al-Fitr?... 29 March 2025 Bookmark Updates: more than 140,000 displaced since Israel resumed... 29 March 2025 Bookmark US immigration officials hold Turkish students on pro-Palestine... 28 March 2025 Bookmark Children under fire 28 March 2025 Bookmark Israeli air attack targets charity in Gaza 28 March 2025 Bookmark Gaza Palestinians talks about the plan of Israel... 27 March 2025 Leave a Comment Cancel Reply Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.
