The Israeli army carried out a strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of Lebanese Hezbollah. It targeted a commander “responsible” for the deadly shooting on the Golan, to which Israel had promised to retaliate.

Two people were killed in the Israeli raid, a source close to the pro-Iranian Islamist movement said, claiming that the targeted commander, Fouad Chokr, who plays “a leading role in Hezbollah’s operations against Israel from southern Lebanon”had survived.

The Israeli army announced in a statement that it had “carried out a targeted attack in Beirut against the commander responsible for the murder of the children of Majdal Shams and many other Israeli civilians”without disclosing his identity.

Minutes after Tuesday night’s strike, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Hezbollah had “crossed the red line”.
