Hundreds of cyclists dressed as ghosts, skeletons and movie characters raced down one of Mexico City’s main avenues to celebrate Day of the Dead in the run-up to Halloween
Many were dressed as Catrinas, the iconic stylized skulls adorned with flowers that represent a bridge between the living and the dead.
For Claudia Zaragoza, a 43-year-old teacher who took up cycling during the COVID-19 pandemic, the event combined her two favorite things: “Day of the Dead and cycling are great”.
“I think there should be more moments like this, perhaps without waiting for a particular celebration, but rather so that more spaces are open to cyclists”she added.
Day of the Dead in Mexico is a multi-day holiday that commemorates the deceased and often takes a humorous turn, with friends and family reminiscing about amusing anecdotes.
