Sunday’s 2024 British Speedgolf Championships at Sunningdale Heath Golf Club provided a good opportunity to see this bizarre hybrid of golf and running.
Fifty-six competitors from around the world took part in the event, a fast-paced hybrid of the two sports where participants complete two rounds of 18 holes in the fewest strokes and the shortest time possible.
Players must find the right balance between pace and accuracy in order to achieve the best possible performance.
Amateur golfer Will Major proved to be the top performer, shooting a 69 in 26 minutes and 54 seconds in the first round and then a 65 in 27 minutes and 3 seconds in the second round, giving a combined score of 187:57 to win the title.
The 33-year-old Londoner, who finished fifth at last year’s championships, said he was “surprised” by his victory.
Matt Gamble became the event’s first-ever adaptive golf champion after shooting a 79 in under 45 minutes, beating two amputee golfers.
