The test has put key technologies such as magnetic levitation and propulsion to the test, although so far the feat has been limited to driving the vehicle along a 90m stretch at just 30km/h. The test has tested key technologies such as magnetic levitation and propulsion, although so far the feat has been limited to driving the vehicle along a 90m stretch at just 30km/h. This achievement brings Europe closer to realising the Hyperloop concept, which enables high-speed, low-energy travel.

The Hyperloop system promises to reduce infrastructure costs and energy consumption compared to cars or planes. Industry and government representatives gathered Tuesday at the European Hyperloop Center in the Netherlands to celebrate the breakthrough, which paves the way for 100 km/h trials later this year and, in the long term, will allow travel between European cities at more than 700 km/h.

Hyperloop technology is attracting increasing interest worldwide, with initiatives in several countries and support from the European Union under its trans-European transport network policy “TEN-T”.
