The Sanuki Kagari Temari is a traditional Japanese craft originating from the island of Shikoku in the southwest of the country.
Several weeks, even months, are necessary to produce the most complex designs.
“The basics of making Sanuki kagari temari involve the use of natural materials and techniques dating mainly from the Edo period.”explains Eiko Araki.
Only a few dozen people, all women, still make temari today according to ancestral standards.
“Through temari, I want to convey the message that there are beautiful things in this world that can only be made by hand.”concludes Eiko Araki.
