Kyiv’s Christmas tree was lit up on Wednesday evening and dozens of residents enjoyed small festivities to mark St. Nicholas.

This year, however, no events will take place during the Christmas holidays, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

“At any time an air alert could sound and that means everyone needs to be in shelter.”he explained.

Many children came to see the Christmas tree with their parents and played with the decorations.
