Members of several indigenous Mexican communities gather in mid-August to honor Cuauhtémoc, who was the last emperor or “tlatoani” of Mexico-Tenochtitlan – the name given to the capital before the city fell to the Spanish in 1521.
Claudia Santos, the organizer of the ceremony, explains that the chosen place is very symbolic in the history of Mexico. It is there that Cuauhtémoc initiated the final defense of the territory before the capture of the capital by the European conquerors.
Claudia Santos explains that the site – where a church now stands – is aligned with the sun.
