No Comment: at least eleven dead in the eruption of the Marapi volcano in Indonesia

The eruption of the Marapi volcano in western Indonesia has left at least eleven dead, emergency services announced on Monday after a night of searching which found three hikers alive but twelve others are still missing.

The eruption of Mount Marapi on the island of Sumatra began on Sunday.

The rescuers took turns lowering the bodies of the deceased to the foot of the mountain, the eruption preventing them from being airlifted.

The Marapi, 2,891 meters high and whose name means “the mountain of fire”, is the most active volcano in Sumatra. Authorities have imposed a three-kilometer exclusion zone around its crater.

Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates causes significant volcanic and seismic activity. The country has nearly 130 active volcanoes.
