Slovakia on Sunday commemorated the 80th anniversary of the historic breakthrough by Allied forces at the Dukla Pass on the Slovak-Polish border during World War II.

Slovakia commemorated Sunday the 80th anniversary of the historic breakthrough of the Allied forces in the Dukla Passon the border between Slovakia and Poland, during the Second World War.

The Battle of Dukla Pass – also known as Operation Carpatho-Dukla – was one of the bloodiest in Slovakian history.

Launched on September 8, 1944 following a call for help from the Czechoslovak government to the Soviets, this operation carried out by the Czech and Slovak resistance allowed the total liberation of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic from the forces of the Third Reich.
