Each summer since 1990, the artist has built a new creature to survey the windy shores of the North Sea, to declare it “dead” in the fall.
These kinetic sculptures, which move on the sand only thanks to the power of the wind, now form an impressive fossil register of creativity and evolution.
Sheltered in an old cable factory, the Strandbeesten Mortary Traces their development, from simple forms to complex and realistic machines. Jansen hopes one day to build a beast that will live forever – but for the moment, he continues to experiment on the beach.
