The biggest religious celebration in the world is marked by a deadly stampede that has left several dozen dead and wounded.

The authorities said the accident occurred on Wednesday morning, local time, near a barricaded area where ascetics were to bathe at the confluence of the Ganges and the Yamuna.

The cause of this crowd movement remains unknown for the moment.

The Kumbh Melah festival, which takes place every 12 years, began on January 13 and is the largest religious gathering in the world.

The authorities expect more than 400 million people to hurry on the pilgrimage site over the next six weeks.

To accommodate tens of thousands of saints, pilgrims and tourists visiting the festival, the authorities have built a huge town of tents on the banks of the Sacred River.
