The International Festival of Surva masquerade games in Pernik, Bulgaria, attracts more than 12,000 international artists and groups.

Known as “Kukeri”, masked dancers with complex costumes chase the evil spirits, celebrate the end of winter and welcome spring.

Recognized by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, this secular tradition brings together various regions and cultures, which has earned Pernik the title of world capital of masquerade games and traditions.
