The attack on this night was triggered by a speech that Mrs. Hasina plans to pronounce before her supporters from neighboring India, where she took refuge last year during a deadly student uprising against the regime she exercised for 15 years.
On Wednesday, some demonstrators threatened to “bulldozer” the building if the former Prime Minister continued his speech, which marks the start of a one month’s protest program led by his political party, the Awami League. The party is trying to gain support from the allegations of attacks against its members and other supporters of Mrs. Hasina.
The interim government, which strives to maintain order and prevent popular justice against supporters of Ms. Hasina, accused the former Prime Minister for generalized corruption and human rights abuses during her reign which started in 2009.
The Awami league of Ms. Hasina accused the government led by Mr. Yunus to violate human rights and to repress minority groups in Bangladesh, which the authorities have denied.
