Intense rains that fell overnight from Wednesday to Thursday morning caused widespread flooding and significant disruptions in Balneário Camboriú, Itajaí and Camboriú, three towns located in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil.
Nicknamed the “Brazilian Dubai,” Balneário Camboriú received almost 60 millimeters of rain in a few hours, while Itajaí recorded 102 millimeters, including 41 millimeters in the space of just an hour.
Described by a resident as a veritable “sea”, a shopping center was heavily damaged and remains closed for an indefinite period.
Emergency services received numerous rescue calls as residents were stranded in flooded buildings and vehicles.
All schools were closed, shelters were set up and authorities urged caution in flood-prone areas.
These persistent rains have highlighted the need to improve drainage systems and flood prevention infrastructure in a region frequently affected by extreme weather events.
